Essential Steps to Take After the Fire

  1. Engage Your Insurance Provider
Notify your insurance company, file a claim, and request a copy of your policy. Consider hiring an independent adjuster or Attorney to represent your interests. These professionals typically work on a per diem basis and can help ensure fair compensation.

  2. Request Mortgage Forbearance
Contact your mortgage servicer to inquire about forbearance options for your loan.

  3. Cancel Utility Services
Reach out to utility providers (gas, water, electricity, internet, and other monthly services) to cancel accounts retroactively to the date of the loss.

  4. Apply for Property Tax Relief
Complete and submit the California Property Tax Disaster Relief Form ADS-820.2 to adjust your property tax obligations.

  5. Seek Individual Disaster Assistance
Visit disasterassistance.gov to apply for federal disaster relief programs available to individuals.

Steps for Rebuilding

  1. Debris Removal
The City will manage the removal of fire-related debris, much of which is classified as hazardous material. This process will be funded by the City to ensure safe and thorough cleanup.

  2. Foundation Evaluation
If the existing foundation remains intact, it may be eligible for reuse, subject to proper evaluation and certification.

  3. Eligibility for Expedited Permitting
To utilize the City’s expedited permitting process, any modifications to the home’s footprint must not exceed a 10% change.

  4. Foundation Certification
Should you choose to reuse your foundation, Our licensed engineer must certify its structural integrity.

  5. Pre-Loss Property Records
S|H will Obtain official City records of your property’s pre-loss condition. While you may retain the original design, you are free to reconfigure interior layouts or update the architectural style as desired.

  6. Permit Processing and Infrastructure Restoration
Once your redesign is finalized and your plans are submitted, permit issuance is expected to take several months. Concurrently, the City will work to restore critical infrastructure, including water, power, and electrical systems.

  7. Builder Selection and Cost Validation
During the permitting phase, S|H will work alongside you to solicit bids from experienced builders. To ensure competitive pricing, consider engaging independent professionals to prepare cost estimates for the reconstruction.
